From Meg:
I am an early career regional stage manager/director and teacher with a graduate degree in theatre. I am interested in pursuing more directing/choreographing gigs whenever I am not teaching. As someone who is open to regional work all over the country (U.S.) how would you recommend I proceed applying for gigs like this? Or should I pursue directing fellowships?

Dear Meg,
I think we’re all open to regional work right now. And where are these gigs that you can apply for? And where are these directing fellowships?
I kid, I kid.
I never got a job through applying. It’s always been through who I know. Either I know the AD, or a director mentioned my name. My advice is to get to know people on a real level. My experience is that it takes about 5 years from introduction to job, but ADs hire their friends when they have a choice. So where do the ADs gather? Service organizations and unions. I always thought I’d only go to the TCG conference if someone else paid my way, but alas, it’s in my budget as a networking trip this year. Sigh.
Let’s be friends and get jobs,
Fefu
